FSU Seminoles Women's Basketball deserves your attention

By Vivian El-Salawy on January 11, 2017

Many are starting to consider Florida State University a “basketball school”, as for the first time in Florida State history, both basketball programs are ranked in the Top 10 at the same time. With a recent win against Duke, the men’s basketball team drew in a wild crowd and the game was sold out. Florida State men’s basketball has had a record breaking start to their season and it has most definitely grabbed the attention of many within Florida State’s community – fans ranging between students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Fans left last night’s game against Duke with their ears ringing over a beautiful victory, screaming the war chant even thirty minutes after the game.

However, the women’s basketball team has been ranked for the longest time. Currently holding a record of 15-2, Florida State women’s basketball team is ranked #6 in the nation. While the women’s team has a great deal of true fans and supporters that attend games on a regular basis, they do not get nearly enough support at their games as they deserve.

Think about this: UConn women’s basketball team won their 90th game in a row, currently ranking them at #1, but FSU women’s basketball came the closest to tearing them down, holding a lead over them for a phenomenal portion of the game.

With an incredibly impressive record, a high ranking, and a truly talented group of women – Florida State women’s basketball has everything they need to fight their way to the top. The only thing that is missing is you.

The men’s basketball game against Duke on Tuesday night showed everybody on national television how exceptionally powerful the support of the fans can be. While this was arguably the biggest game at the Tucker Center in about 23 years for men’s basketball, the women’s basketball team has needed that kind of support all season as well.

Florida State’s crowds provide immeasurable support – the atmosphere that they create is simply a unique experience, and both the men’s basketball team and the women’s basketball team deserve their support at every game, not just the big ones.

According to a report by Seminoles.com, the game against Duke women’s basketball team drew in a program-record 6,687 to the Tucker Center, with a previous record of 6,440 against UConn in 2009.

Florida State head coach Sue Semrau makes a statement to FSU Sports on the new attendance record:

“We’ve been fighting for 20 years to get this kind of buzz and Tallahassee is really waking up to being in support of us. And I thank the Alumni that was in attendance today for our team and the Boosters that have generously donated so much money to get this arena to make it a fun place to watch a game now. And now it’s finally a fun place to change clothes in; you know, now we opened our new locker room yesterday, and to open it this way is fun.”

It is important to recognize that your support in attending both men’s and women’s basketball games helps the team excel not only in the moment, but behind the scenes too.

While there has been an incredible increase in attendance to these games, it’s really not quite at the level of support that the team truly needs.

Sue Semrau continues in response to FSU Sports on whether or not the attendance is where she wants it to be:

“Not yet. I mean, we’re not done yet and that’s 6,000, eh. We want to fill this place; this can turn into a great basketball town and you look at what the other sports have done and just the excellence across the board, we want to be a part of that.”

Let’s give both the women’s and men’s basketball teams sold out games from here on out. We have the talent, the fan base, and the passion – what’s in our way?
